ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine the status of community care services regarding traditional Korean medicine (TKM) for older adults and raise awareness on current opinions and services of TKM institutions. METHODS: The National Development Institute of Korean Medicine conducted a survey of 16 local governments by sending official letters through an electronic document system from October 2020 to November 2020. The survey items included basic demographic information and information about TKM service. RESULTS: Eleven (68.8%) of the 16 local governments provided TKM home care services. A total of 136 TKM clinics provided home care services for 598 older adults with musculoskeletal disorders. The number of TKM services provided in five or more local governments were cupping 11 (100.0%), acupuncture 11 (100.0%), education and consulting 10 (90.9%), and moxibustion 9 (81.8%). Moreover, pain (recorded on visual analogue scale) and quality of life significantly improved following TKM services (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Covered under medical policy, TKM homecare services could function as a viable alternative for continued medical care disrupted during the coronavirus disease 19 pandemic. In addition, standardisation and legalisation of these services could ensure and improve their efficiency.

ABSTRACT

Adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated gene delivery holds great promise for gene therapy. However, the non-invasive delivery of AAV for lung tissues has not been adequately established. Here, we revealed that the intratracheal administration of an appropriate amount of AAV2/8 predominantly targets lung tissue. AAV-mediated gene delivery that we used in this study induced the expression of the desired protein in lung parenchymal cells, including alveolar type II cells. We harnessed the technique to develop severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-susceptible mice. Three kinds of immune function-relevant gene knockout (KO) mice were transduced with AAV encoding human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (hACE2) and then injected with SARS-CoV-2. Among these mice, type I interferon receptor (IFNAR) KO mice showed increased viral titer in the lungs compared to that in the other KO mice. Moreover, nucleocapsid protein of SARS-CoV-2 and multiple lesions in the trachea and lung were observed in AAV-hACE2-transduced, SARS-CoV-2-infected IFNAR KO mice, indicating the involvement of type I interferon signaling in the protection of SARS-CoV-2. In this study, we demonstrate the ease and rapidness of the intratracheal administration of AAV for targeting lung tissue in mice, and this can be used to study diverse pulmonary diseases.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThe purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of interactivity and vividness on perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment and their consequent impacts on consumer behavioral responses in a retail furniture VR store context. Considering the lack of VR empirical research, the indirect effect of interactivity and vividness on perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment through telepresence and the moderating effect of consumer previous experience with VR are also included.Design/methodology/approachA commercial IKEA VR store was chosen for the study. Head-mounted display (HMD) VR headsets were employed for the VR shopping experience. The study was conducted at a laboratory at a large university in the southeastern United States. A total of 146 college students participated in the study.FindingsVividness had significant positive effects on perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment, which in turn influenced attitude towards VR and behavioral intentions. Interactivity did not have positive impacts on perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment. However, it indirectly affected perceived usefulness and perceived enjoyment through telepresence. The findings also proved the moderating effect of consumer previous VR experience between interactivity and perceived usefulness and between interactivity and perceived enjoyment. The relationship between attitude and behavioral intentions was also positive.Originality/valueNotwithstanding the benefits of VR in relation to its utilitarian, hedonic, and behavioral values, little is known about consumers' responses towards the usage of VR as a shopping tool. The present study can be considered as a starting point in understanding the usefulness of VR from consumer and managerial perspectives. The findings of VR indicated in the study will help practitioners understand the urgency of adopting VR in a retail setting.
